Nwanchukwu Ozioko, popularly known as
Vast from the popular singing group, Bracket, has been diagnosed with
Lymphoma, a type of cancer of the blood.
The singer was diagnosed in February this year after suffering serious body pains, headaches, non stop coughing, loss of weight and weakness while in Paris for a show. He flew to London where a test conducted determined he had cancer.
Vast has been receiving treatment at the Wellington Hospital in the UK since February and there are reports he's responding very well to treatment. He has undergone 4 circles of chemotherapy with each circle costing about N1.4million. He will do a few more before returning to Nigeria next month.
According to sources close to the singer, the sad part is that he actually went to a hospital in Nigeria late last year when he started losing weight and feeling weak.
They conducted a test on him but it took them forever to come back with the test result. Over three months actually. By then the cancer had spread to his liver. But thankfully he's getting better and will return home soon.

How ‘Ogas At The Top’ Govern For Themselves
A former military dictator, Gen.
Ibrahim Babangida, once remarked that the problem with Nigeria was the
elite. These are a privileged band of individuals that have piloted the
affairs of this country since the 1980s, either from inside government
or from the sidelines. They include career politicians that never seem
to leave the political arena, constantly recycling themselves.
A
typical CV of these politicians would read: ex-Personal Assistant,
ex-Minister, ex-Senator, ex-Governor plus a string of other exes and
political appointments. For these privileged individuals, being in
government is “until death, do us part”. They move from one political
office to the other “sharing the money”.
Also numbered among Nigeria’s ruling elite are shakers and movers in the civil service, traditional rulers, retired senior military personnel, influential academics and captains of industry who wheel and deal in the corridors of power.
For the majority of these individuals, involvement in government in one form or the other, is not about serving the people but about their own interests. These “Ogas at the top” have crafted a brand of democracy in Nigeria that can best be described as the government of the elite, by the elite and for the elite.
They preside over a system of governance in Nigeria that is based on patronage, not merit. You must get that vital introduction from these godfathers before you can get a job in the public service; and you must carry the right party card to get that vital government contract. This brand of governance has created a society of the privileged few that have everything and a docile majority that scramble for crumbs from their tables.
In a starkly divided society of the haves and the have-nots, or as some have put it, “the oppressor” and “the oppressed”, the oppressed must take their share of the blame for their plight. It is incredible, from debates in the social media, the number of people that actually supported the President’s pardon of ex-Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha. Some even expressed sympathy for Alams, using phrases like “He has suffered enough”, “it is not only him that stole” as if this justified the crime. These are the same oppressed that would have had better health care, better roads, and better schools if this man had not stolen from them.

Emir Of Gummi Dies At 75
The Emir of Gummi in Zamfara, Alhaji Aliyu Abara, has died at the age of 75.
A
statement by the Secretary to Zamfara Government, Alhaji Hassan Atto,
said Abara died on Wednesday evening at Usmanu Danfodio University
Teaching Hospital, Sokoto, after a brief illness.
The statement, which was made available in Gusau on Thursday, however did not give details of the late Emir’s ailment.
It said the late monarch would be buried on Thursday morning at his Gummi palace by 10.00 a.m. according to Islamic rites.

down as Manchester United manager has led to plenty speculations
regarding his potential successor, with David Moyes and Jose Mourinho
featuring highly among the candidates to take over at Old Trafford.
Both
coaches have been linked with a move away from their respective teams
in the summer with Moyes' contract expiring in the summer, and an
extension is yet to be signed while Mourinho on the other hand is still
locked in a battle of wills at the Bernabeu club: to force an exit from
the Spanish giants, but his destination in the summer remains yet
unknown.
The possible vacancy at Manchester United is likely to impact the ongoing delicate manoeuvring between Mourinho and Real Madrid chief Florentino Perez, as both men look to profit from the Portuguese coach's likely exit from the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in the coming weeks, but an Old Trafford arrival for the former Porto and Inter Milan coach may materialize as his agent Jorge Mendes has stated that its 80% likely he joins Chelsea this summer, despite the rumoured interest in succeeding Sir Alex.
Moyes has continued to play the waiting game ever since announcing in February that he would make a final decision in the summer. He did so again last Friday. The Scot has has refused to commit himself, fuelling talks that he has developed itchy feet, and speculation as to where next he might go.

Bama Killings: Rights Group Calls For State Of Emergency In Borno
A human rights organisation, Youth and
Conflict Resolution Initiatives, YCRI, has described Tuesday’s attacks
on police and military formations in Bama, Borno state by the Boko Haram
sect as a direct declaration of war by the sect on the Federal Republic
of Nigeria.
While condemning the attacks, the group in a
statement signed by its Director of International Relations, Mr Efemena
Agadama, called on the federal government to consider state of
emergency rule in the volatile northern state.
“We again call on the federal government to do more to protect the lives of all security operatives by providing them with enhanced safety equipment, combat resources and moral support to combat the insurgency.
“The federal government should be considering all options for a state of emergency in Borno state to protect lives and property of all citizens and the security operatives. Or is the government waiting for the sect to kill everyone in Borno state before it considers a state of emergency? This is not the time to play politics when the survival of the nation is at stake so there should be an end to these daily killings.”
YCRI cautioned those playing politics with security situation in the country stressing that what the country is facing now goes beyond 2015 politics. “There is no country in the world that will be discussing politics and economy when a terrorists sect directs the affairs of a section of that country and in Nigeria, Borno seems to be a state under the command of the Boko Haram sect.”
The statement however, called on all stakeholders to support the JTF and other security operatives in their efforts to subdue the insurgents. “The JTF needs information from the people of Borno and Yobe states to operate effectively.”

Gunmen Kill Two Relatives Of Governor Dickson’s Aide
It was gathered that
the Ziriki’s brothers were shot dead by some militants operating in
Kuroamagbene, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.They were reportedly murdered while attempting to prevent the militants from stealing a boat at the shore of their village.
The latest attack comes about a week that yet-to-be identified gunmen also shot dead at least eight people in the same local government area.
When contacted, spokesman of the Bayelsa State Police Command, Mr. Egoavoen Emokpai, said he was yet to get details on the incident.
Despite the outcry by Bayelsa state government that the state has been evaded by militants and its attempt to curb it, armed gunmen on Monday struck, killing two relatives of Dr. Godswill Ziriki, the Special Adviser to Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State on Higher Education.
Bayelsa Community Criminal Haven, Arrests Two - JTF Declares
Joint Task Force, codenamed Operation
Pulo Shield, has declared Azuzuama and its suburbs in Southern Ijaw
Local Government of Bayelsa State, den of criminals.
The
Media Coordinator, JTF, Lt. Col. Onyema Nwachukwu, while briefing
reporters on the task force operations on Tuesday, said the development
had forced the security outfit to establish a base in the community.
He said kidnappers, pirates and militants operated conveniently in Azuzuama and its environs because of their difficult terrains.
He added that criminals from Edo, Delta and other states, including foreigners, were using the area to unleash terror on the region.
He said, “The place is a safe haven for criminals. Criminals from outside the country even have hideouts in Azuzuama and that is why we are maintaining military presence in the area. The community needs to help us.
“The deployment in Azuzuama is robust and comprises all components of the JTF for operational effectiveness. The troops are fully on the ground and their impact is already being felt given the general atmosphere of calm and security that prevails in the area.”
Describing the killing of the 12 police officers in the community by gunmen as strange, Nwachukwu said the incident triggered the ongoing military operation in the council.
He also noted that the JTF operatives had arrested two persons in connection with the recent killings of eight persons in Lobia.
Meanwhile, the military JTF in Rivers, on Tuesday said it had put in place new strategies to stop illegal bunkering, pipeline vandalism and sundry crimes in the state.
The Commander of the Army 2 Brigade and Sector Two of JTF, Brig.-Gen. Osasogie Uzamere, stated this at the Brigade’s 2013 annual range classification exercise in Igwuruta.
Uzamere said JTF had uncovered new techniques used by oil thieves to sabotage the nation’s economy and as such, renewed its tactics to ensure its proficiency to combat illegal bunkering.
