The Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, Honorable Aminu Tambuwal, on Friday dispelled rumors that he was on the verge of joining an opposition party.

Apparently reacting to President Jonathan Goodluck Jonathan’s warning to elected political office holders under the platform of the party Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that he would not hesitate to wield the big stick if they are found wanting, the Speaker said he is a member of the party.

FIFA wants the centenary World Cup in 2030 to be jointly staged by Uruguay and Argentina, who met in the final of the inaugural tournament, Argentine Football Association President, Julio Grondona, said on Thursday.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that in 1930, Uruguay, the then double Olympic champions, beat Argentina 4-2 in the showpiece match at the Centenario Stadium in Montevideo in front of more than 80,000 enthusiastic soccer fans.

Enugu government signs 2013 programme implementation agreement with UNICEF

Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu State has described the partnership between his administration in the state with UNICEF in promoting healthcare and other social services to the people as very beneficial and rewarding.

The Governor made this assertion through his Deputy, Mr. Sunday Onyebuchi at the signing of the 2013 Programme Implementation Agreement ,PIA, between the state government and the UNICEF Country Representatives at the Government House, Enugu.

Chime noted that the state benefited most in the partnership in the area of policy formulation for the healthcare of children and women.

He added that Enugu State was the first to have launchÉd the Free Maternal and Child Healthcare in Nigeria at the inception of the administration and had sustained the programme till date with good results.

He explained that government also empowered women through workshop and seminars on HIV/AIDS eradication in the state.

The Governor said that his administration was women friendly, adding that 30% of the elected and appointed posts in the state were occupied by women.

Governor Chime observed that with the signing of the implementation agreement, a new chart had been created to actualize the drive on the 2013 programme.

Earlier in an address, the leader of the UNICEF Country Representatives, Jean Cough expressed happiness for the cordial relationship that currently exists between the state government and UNICEF, adding that Governor Chime’s administration had continued to provide enabling environment that had facilitated her organization’s implementation of her programmes in the state.

She added that she was in the Government House to formalize the partnership of UNICEF with the state government to foster the interest of women and children.

Cough said that UNICEF and state governments signed an annual Programme Implementation Agreement ,PIA, in line with the Federal Government/UNICEF 2009 to 2013 country programme of cooperation.

UNICEF Country Representative added that the ongoing health sector programmes in the state were impressive, especially the strengthening of human resources, cutting across all the community health facilities, the provision of logistic support, and the procurement of drugs to support the free health services for women and children.

She further said that UNICEF would continue to provide technical support to Ministries, Departments and Agencies in the state, including the civil society organizations for the realization of the rights of women and children.

According to her, some of the achievements made by UNICEF in partnership with the Enugu State Government for children’s survival include, basic education and protection in the state.

She requested Governor Chime to sustain the progress made so far and consolidate on the gains made in improving child health outcomes in the state.

She pleaded with the state government to increase the allocation of resources to the delivery of basic services to children.

The billionaire was accused of corruption by a civil society group.
Reports reaching PREMIUM TIMES indicate that embattled owner of Air Nigeria, Jimoh Ibrahim, was not allowed to speak at an anti-corruption conference organised by the Central Bank of Nigeria in conjunction with the Nigerian Police and the London Metropolitan Police.
A civil society group, Civil Society Network Against Corruption (CSNAC), had petitioned the British Government not allow Mr. Ibrahim speak at the conference, in which he had been pencilled down as a speaker.

JTF apprehends Boko Haram terrorists in Yobe

The Yobe state Command of the Joint Task Force,JTF, has smashed a group of Boko Haram, recovering 2 vehicles, arms and ammunition, including other items.
This was disclosed by the JTF spokesman, Lt. Lazarus Eli, in Damaturu while addressing newsmen.
According to him, the terrorists attacked a JTF checkpoint in Fune and made away with a police vehicle conveying some items to Borno state.
The JTF pursued the terrorists and engaged them in a gun battle and they were overpowered. The stolen vehicle was however recovered.
Items recovered from the terrorists include AK47 rifle, three Rocket Propelled Gun bombs, three RPG chargers, one riot gun and 485 rounds of ammunition, disclosed the Spokesman.

Physically challenged people in Delta state shut down the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) secretariat on Friday to protest their alleged exclusion from the programme by the chairman of Ughelli North Local Government Area Transition Committee, Delta State, Friday Akpoyibo.
The chairman of the Ughelli North Local Government Area chapter of the association, Ernest Igbuzor, said: “The council chairman has reneged on various promises he made to us.  Our group is under the supervision of the State Ministry of Women Affairs and we have presented a proposal which is keyed into by the council’s administration”.
According to reports, eyewitness said Akpoyibo fled his office before the aggrieved disabled persons arrived the council’s secretariat adding that a bus belonging to the National Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, was nearly vandalised.

Conveners of the National Political Summit on the future of Nigeria, tagged, Uyo 2013, have dismissed the recent comments credited to elder statesman, Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, that those billed to attend the event were against the progress of President Goodluck Jonathan.

Reacting to the statement yesterday, Ms Ankio Briggs, one of the South-South coordinators of the summit, said Clark’s words were harsh and unacceptable.

She said, “How can calling for this summit of Nigerians from different sectors and parts of the country to discuss the future of Nigeria, call for a Sovereign National Conference, people’s constitution and true federalism amount to being unpatriotic, undemocratic and enemy of President Jonathan? I find it difficult to believe that my elder and leader, Chief E.K Clark feel that when people sit down to discuss the future of Nigeria, they are unpatriotic and undemocratic. It is harsh.

Parading the lady (names withheld), yesterday, in Asaba, the state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Lucky Uyabeme, said she was picked up following a report lodged “by a Professor of Faculty of Fine Arts, DELSU, Abraka who reported that he received a threat text message from an unknown person demanding N100,000 to avoid defamatory publication on him.
