GOVERNORS
have pledged their readiness to ensure the security of lives of members
of the National Youth Service Corps posted to their states in the
course of their national service.
The pledge came amidst apprehension
generated by the insecurity in some parts of the country as the corps
members embarked on a three-week orientation programme for the 2013
Batch ‘B’ of the national service.
The governors also took turns to remind the corp members of the role in nation building.
Fashola, who was represented by Dr. Wale
Ahmed said, “Corps members should call our toll-free telephone numbers –
767 and 112 – when in distress. Our men are always available to attend
to your calls and give necessary assistance.”
He urged the corps members to contribute
meaningfully to the development of the various communities where they
were posted to serve.
In Ekiti State, Governor Kayode Fayemi
represented by his deputy, Prof. Modupe Adelabu, reminded the youth of
the need to see themselves as future leaders and imbibe the spirit of
national unity as they gradually prepared to take over leadership
responsibilities.
He said the younger folks had a role to
play for Nigeria to accomplish its developmental goals and remain one
indivisible nation.
In Enugu State, Governor Sullivan Chime
said the corps members should imbibe at least a skill that would make
them employable or self-employed after their service year.
He also urged them to improve on the
skills already acquired in the course of their three-week orientation at
the NYSC camp in the state.
He said, “Skills acquisition has become
essential to all graduates because the government can no longer employ
every graduate and the graduates would need to be self employed and even
become employers of labour.”
In Ogun state, Governor Ibikunle Amosun
called on the corps members to put into use the experience, expertise
and knowledge acquired so far in contributing their quota to the
socio-economic development of the state.
