Bayelsa battles rumour mongers

Published on April 17, 2013 The government of oil rich Nigerian state of Bayelsa decided something needed to be done, to stamp out the spreading of rumours. So billboards have been erected around town and a committee has been named.
The campaign against rumour mongering is now underway in the home state of Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan.
“What rumours are they scared of?” said Simon Goladi, a 34-year-old sociology student walking near one of the anti-rumour billboards in the state capital Yenagoa. “It’s just a waste of resources.”

While it may seem odd that the state, located in the country’s oil-producing Niger Delta region and with an impoverished population, has decided to spend energy and resources on stopping rumours, there is precedent.
The previous Bayelsa governor had a special assistant on propaganda and rumour management, his spokesman Doifie Ola said. Current Governor Henry Seriake Dickson has opted for a 13-member committee, called the Public Information Management Committee.
•Governor Henry Seriake Dickson
•Governor Henry Seriake Dickson
“That points to the fact that rumours were a problem,” Tarinyo Akono, a member of the committee who also works for the state information ministry, said of the previous government’s decision to have an adviser on rumours.
“It’s also important to check this thing because in the long run the problem might overwhelm the people.”
So far the most visible signs of the campaign have been billboards depicting actors pretending to pass rumours to each other and urging residents to “say no to rumour mongers.”
They have been erected at main intersections and phone numbers are listed for residents to call “when in doubt.” Akono specified that the numbers were to allow residents to verify whether information being passed on to them was true, however no one was answering at any of the three numbers earlier this week.
Niger Delta activist Anyakwee Nsirimovu of the Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law condemned the campaign, saying he believed it was simply meant to protect the governor from criticism as well as hand out government positions to allies – a well-worn practice in Nigeria, where deeply rooted corruption has kept meaningful development out of reach in many cases.
“They want to, through the backdoor, introduce censorship,” he said.
Bayelsa’s governor is no stranger to criticism over alleged patronage. He faced an uproar last year when the wife of the president, a political ally, was granted a top government post.
But Akono says the anti-rumour campaign is both legitimate and important.
Rumours are capable of breaking up marriages or causing false information to spread about violence that can lead to shops closing, he said.
He insists that no one will be arrested for spreading rumours and that the campaign is merely meant to persuade people to resist the temptation to dish dirt.
Asked if there was something specific that prompted the campaign, he gave examples of rumours spreading about the governor himself.
In September when Dickson was out of town, a rumour spread that he had suffered health problems and become physically paralysed, said Akono. Another time earlier this year, a rumour spread that a court had overturned his election in 2012 polls, he said.
“Meanwhile, there was no iota of truth in all of these things,” he said. “Business people also get scared. If not checked, it could also result in some of the contractors running away from the state.”
But considering those examples, did that mean the effort was mainly aimed at protecting the governor?
“No, I’m just giving you instances,” said Akono. “There are other instances.”
Opinions around town were difficult to gauge.
While sociology student Goladi said he felt it was all a waste of time, another resident working at a nearby automotive spare parts shop agreed with the campaign and even went further, arguing that people should be arrested for spreading false rumours.
“The former state governor, they said he changed into lady’s clothes,” said Tony Tochukwu, 26, referring to another former Bayelsa governor. “It’s not good. It’s false.”
There were widespread allegations in in the local press that the ex-governor he was referring to dressed as a woman to disguise himself when he fled Britain after being charged with money laundering. It has never been confirmed and the ex-governor later denied it.
The cost of the anti-rumour campaign is not yet clear. Akono said the budget is still being put together, though he specified that his position did not include a salary.
However, committee members would likely receive allowances to cover their expenses, he said.
“Nobody’s limiting criticism,” he said. “Criticism is different from falsehood. If there is a politician who is not doing well, I can come out and say, ‘my brother, you are not doing well.’ That is different than spreading rumours.”

An aide of Gov. Dickson’s faults planned amnesty for Boko Haram

By Samuel Oyadongha
Yenagoa — Special Adviser to Bayelsa State Governor on Political Matters, Chief Fred Agbedi, has faulted the planned amnesty for members of the Boko Haram sect.
Agbedi argued, in Yenagoa, that amnesty cannot be given to faceless groups, who are not prepared to sheathe their swords.
He said it was the responsibility of all to help defeat the Boko Haram scourge, which had led to total break down of law and order in some parts of the country.
He said: “I don’t believe that they have the right to amnesty because as far as I am concerned, amnesty is not a thing you just give out to somebody who decides on his volition to destroy lives and property.”
“They burn down primary schools, kill poor innocent teachers and pupils or go to a beer parlour and find people who are drinking burukutu, people who are not drinking expensive wine and spirit, which shows their poor status, and dropped bomb on them.
“These are people who are already in pains from the economic situation of the country.
“I don’t know the kind of amnesty that people are saying that should be given to Boko Haram.
“They have no right to ask for amnesty because who do they want the amnesty for and for what reason? Probably because amnesty was given to Niger Delta agitators, who were agitating for a better deal.”

8 Ways To Have The Hottest Sex Of Your Life

Rodeo Rides
While having sex isn't any boomer's first rodeo, having wild monkey sex may be less familiar. What's wild monkey sex? Imagine the hottest sexual fantasies you ever conjured up, becoming your reality. But here's the thing that makes it somewhat elusive; you won't be having wild monkey sex if you're having casual sex, because the wild monkey variety depends on a powerful heart connection. I can hear the boys' chorus warming up. "This is just some emotional bullshit, right?" Wrong.
A Boat MissedI've spent a lifetime being sexual, but not in many truly loving relationships, and while sex sometimes bordered on wild monkey, it rarely reached those heights. Sex has always been important to me, but I missed the wild monkey boat until I finally put sex and love together. If you've never been deeply in love, not infatuated or kind of in love, then you've never had wild monkey sex. The best casual sex on the planet can't hold a candle to the wild monkey version. Why? Fair question.
In Love We Trust
If you hope to have the ultimate sexual pleasure, trust is a major factor. Considering that sex is the most intimate interpersonal act, it isn't much of a stretch to see how it's closely tied to trust, particularly for boomers whose goal is to be in an enduring relationship. It's also not difficult to grasp how fully trusting a sexual partner can add to the quality of sex with that person. Having your sexual fantasies come to life is far more likely if you're with a partner who isn't thinking about feeling safe, and can be completely uninhibited instead.

No Limitations
Then there's the pleasuring factor. If I love a woman, I'm going to knock myself out to please her sexually, in any way she desires. I'm in a steamy, hot, loving relationship now, and there's nothing either of us desires sexually, that the other isn't thrilled to provide. I've had very few casual sexual experiences in which my partner was willing to completely let go of all her inhibitions and satisfy my every sexual fantasy, without reservation. There's always some holding back in casual sex because there's a degree of hesitation being sexual with a veritable stranger you don't know, especially today.
I Can't Get No
There's also the satisfaction factor. Casual sex always left me feeling unsatisfied, the amount and duration, notwithstanding. At best, it was a few rungs above self-abuse, which every guy knows doesn't really satisfy either. Satisfaction-wise, casual sex is a distant second to wild monkey sex.

A Body Roadmap
And there's the familiarity factor, knowing what makes your partner monkey wild, that isn't possible in casual sex. I know my partner's body down to the last freckle, and since we're in love, we make each other's sexual pleasure tantamount. Casual sex is generally more selfish and self-centered.

Explosive Sex

Pleasure-wise, there's a world of difference between getting it on just to get off, and getting it on to make your partner's sexual world spin blissfully out of control. The incentive to make that a reality is driven by the love you feel for that person. The difference is a deep desire to make their world explode with intense pleasure, knowing they'll make yours explode too, and out of love, not obligation. Fantasies aren't going to become realities with a partner we don't know and love. So wild monkey sex remains out of reach. And, you can't buy wild monkey sex, because sex for money isn't remotely authentic.
The Ultimate Turn On
Loving sex is wild, uncontrolled, uninhibited and without rules. Imagine every one of your sexual fantasies becoming a reality, without ever having to ask, simply because your partner loves you, knows exactly what you like, and can't wait to give it all to you. That's not ever going to happen with someone who doesn't love you and trust you. Having my sweetheart whisper "I love you", while being sexual, arouses me way more than a casual sex partner screaming, "don't stop, don't stop," ever did.

Unending Debate On Pastors’ Jets --- How Do You Feel? Is It Right? Is It Wrong?

A few days ago, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God and one of Nigeria’s most respected Christian leaders, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, noted in an interview with a global news network, Al-Jazeera, that he bought a private jet to aid him in his work as the head of the church.
“When you have to oversee churches in 160 countries, you can’t do that on a bicycle,” Adeboye was quoted as saying in the interview.
With that statement, the pastor confirmed that he is among prominent Christian leaders, including the vocal President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, and the head of the Living Faith Church Worldwide, Bishop David Oyedepo, who claimed to have acquired private jets for similar purposes.
But Adeboye’s defence ignited reactions from many Nigerians across the country. A few minutes after the interview was broadcast live on television, it went viral on social media. In no time, the acquisition of private aircrafts by the nation’s top clergy became the subject of yet another heated debate nationwide.
While some people rose in support of Adeboye, others challenged his admission on the grounds that there was no moral justification for acquiring a private jet in a country riddled with poverty, with many church members among the poor.
Yet there are people who do not only reason with Adeboye on the size of his congregation they also believe that circumstances in the Nigerian system makes owning a private jet by a man of his status a necessity. They cannot imagine a figure like him going to queue at the airport for a plane that may not come two hours after schedule.
Besides, they believe that rich members of the churches that usually provide money for the aircrafts. This is apart from the fact that some other pastors around the world, including American preachers, Kenneth Copeland and Benny Hinn, own jets Yet dissenting voices are also loud and clear.
The debate continued on Monday online. A reader named Toni Daramola wrote, “There must be a business plan worthy of emulation from the Catholic Pope.
If you argue that the air traffic in Nigeria is unpredictable, which is true, then our pastors should use their enormous influence to set things right. I hate to criticise Pastor Adeboye because I admire him a lot, but it is not justifiable to own and maintain jets when majority of the followers are very poor. I don‘t know how anybody can justify that. Pastor Kumuyi has a similar ministry with churches worldwide and he queues at the airports and flies commercial airlines. It is just not morally right. We have become a laughing stock among enlightened folks. God help us in Nigeria.”
But he was countered by one Bassey Kelvin, who was clearly opposed to the criticism of the Christian leaders. Wondering just when it became the duties of the pastors to assume the responsibilities of Presidents or other political leaders, Kelvin said, “You say what you absolutely know nothing about. Do you follow these pastors about to know if or not they talk to these leaders about their ways?”
Still, Pastor Adeboye had a few supporters even in this forum. One of them, registered as Billyonaire, rose to his defence, in response to a preceding comment that Jesus Christ did not own a single private in His own time.
Billyonaire said, “Jesus did not have overseas membership, Goddamit. Our pastors have millions of members in over 160 countries. How many members did Jesus have? Jesus needed a boat and a donkey and he used them. There was no jet then. I am sure he would have got one, if he could afford it.”
A few months ago, the Catholic Bishop of the Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah made a similar observation.
Speaking against the backdrop of the presentation of a private jet to Oritsejafor by members of his church, Kukah, had noted that the acquisition of private jets by Christian leaders diminished the moral voice of the church in the fight against corruption.
He had said, “The stories of corrupt men and women being given recognition by their churches or mosques as gallant sons and daughters and the embarrassing stories of pastors displaying conspicuous wealth as we hear from the purchases of private jets and so on clearly diminish our moral voice.
“Unless we distance ourselves, we cannot speak the truth to power. We cannot hear the wails of the poor and the weak. We should not be seen as playing the praying wing of the party in power.”
Also in his reaction to the subject, Lagos-based lawyer, Fred Agbaje, said that though the Federal Government could do nothing to stop Christian leaders from acquiring privates jets, it could help check the trend by ensuring that then planes were not used for commercial purposes.
“The government can also impose heavy taxation on such aircraft to discourage others in the future,” he said.

Why NFF Is Not Happy With Keshi – Adokiye

1980 Nations Cup winner, Chief Adokiye Amiesimaka yesterday said that the Nigeria Football Federation was wrong to sack the assistant coach of the Super Eagles, Sylvanus Okpala, without the consent of Stephen Keshi.
Stephen Keshi
Stephen Keshi
Former Attorney-General of Rivers State, also said that the ongoing reformation process by the NFF in the Super Eagles, which has led to the sacking of some backroom staff and reduction of bonuses was a ruse to frustrate Keshi out of the Eagles post.
Coach Stephen Keshi has Adokiye said that he was not surprised with the current plot to unsettle Keshi, noting that the NFF was envious of the fame and fortune made by the former Eagles captain after the Nations Cup triumph in South Africa last February.
“Ordinarily, the NFF can hire and fire but the circumstances here make the situation rather unfortunate. How do you sack an assistant coach, without reference to the chief coach, especially when he was recommended by the chief coach? The chief coach must have seen something in him that he considered to be useful. So it bothers me that Keshi was reportedly not consulted.
ALSO READ: Why NFF Is Unhappy With Keshi – Inyama
“The critical question here is why was Keshi not consulted; that is very suspicious and very unfortunate. But I am not surprised because the so-called NFF are not happy that Keshi won the Nations Cup. They are not happy and they want him out so that they will go ahead and appoint their foreign coach, no matter his calibre.
“And I wished that Keshi had stuck to his guns and resigned after the Nations Cup victory. The so-called NFF want to see Keshi’s back. They do not want him to even be there. This reformation they are carrying out is a ruse. I am not surprised too that they have sacked some backroom staff .
These backroom staff got millions from State Governors. They were given gifts and money and do you think that the guys in the NFF are happy? They are not happy that these people have become millionaires. Nigerians don’t know the people they are dealing with.
“There is envy in it. I am telling you that they are envious. They are not just jealous but envious. They are not happy that Keshi has made so much money, that his backroom staff have made so much money.
That is why they are doing all these things. Nigerians should read between the lines. These are people who had gone to the NFF to make money. They are there to make money for themselves, they are not there to run football, in the first place.
“When they are there and Keshi and his backroom staff are making millions, do you think they are happy?” They are not. That is why they want Keshi to fail”, added Adokiye, who appealed to the Sports Minister to intervene by calling the NFF to stop pursuing vendetta against Keshi.
“I want the Sports Minister to intervene because for now, he is the one running football courtesy of the NFA Act of 2004. They want to discourage Keshi. They want him to fail.
How can you sack someone like Sylvanus Okpala, who we know is a very competent tactician, without reference to his boss. They do not want Keshi to be happy”, he said.
He said that it will be very difficult for the Eagles to do well in their subsequent World Cup qualifying matches if the situation in the team is not arrested now.
Watch out for the details of the interesting interview with Adokiye in SportsVanguard on Friday.

The wait is over. After months of speculation, Jose Mourinho has agreed to return to the Chelsea hot-seat next season according to the Daily Star.
And the current Real Madrid manager has already drawn up a list of transfer targets to help the Blues return to the top of the Premier League – headlined by strikers Hulk and Radamel Falcao.
Jose Mourinho

According to the reports, Mourinho will return to Stamford Bridge at the end of the season on a salary that more than matches his current £12 million-a-year package at Madrid. But the 50-year-old realises Chelsea need some extra firepower to compete against the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal and emerging powerhouse Tottenham.
Mourinho is a big admirer of Hulk while Atletico Madrid’s Radamel Falcao has long been rumoured with a move to London.
The news may just reinforce Romelu Lukaku’s desire to seek another loan move away from the club next season, with the Mirror reporting the teenager, currently plying his trade with West Brom, has asked Blues officials to secure him another stint in the Premier League. And with European football on his mind, a move to the Capital One champions, Swansea, is on the cards.

3 Feared Dead As Container Falls Off Truck

No fewer than three persons were feared dead, Tuesday, when a container fell off an articulated truck along Apapa/Oshodi expressway and landed on commuters waiting for buses at Otto-Wharf bus-stop, killing three of them. Others reportedly sustained injuries.
According to reports, the driver of the truck with number plate XG 616 UWN attempted to overtake a vehicle at the bus-stop, at about 2.30pm, and suddenly the empty container fell off, landing on unsuspecting commuters.
When Vanguard arrived the scene, a Federal Road Safety Corps official who identified himself simply as Chigbo said the truck driver was on high speed and could not control it when he got to the bus-stop.
The driver of a car and two other persons waiting to board buses to their respective destinations, according to him, were affected, adding that the container was removed and the victims rushed to an undisclosed hospital.
